AJI sues Jakarta administration<\/p>\n
The Alliance of Independent Journalists (AJI) filed a suit
\nagainst the Jakarta administration, East Jakarta Mayoralty and
\nthe head of the mayoralty's public order office, Dapot Manihuruk,
\nfor breaking a press law by verbally abusing one of its members
\nin public.<\/p>\n
Edi Haryadi, a reporter for the Jakarta-based Warta Kota daily
\nwas covering a case involving a disputed plot of land on Jl.
\nCakung Cilincing in East Jakarta, on March 27, when he was
\napproached by Dapot Manihuruk who launched into a verbal assault.<\/p>\n
According to the press law, Manihuruk should have used his
\nright to issue a formal written objection in reply to the
\nnewspaper article, which published comments made by legal experts
\nthat the public order office had abused its power by intervening
\nin a private land dispute without following proper legal
\nproceedings.<\/p>\n
The Central Jakarta District Court, however, failed to start
\nthe trial on Tuesday, because none of the accused or their
\ndefense lawyers appeared. Presiding Judge Andi Samsan Nganro
\nadjourned the first hearing for two weeks. --JP<\/p>",
