AJI protests reporter's prosecution<\/p>\n
JAKARTA: The Alliance of Independent Journalists (AJI)
\nstrongly protested the police's decision to declare an editor of
\nTempo magazine, Ahmad Taufik, as a suspect in a defamation case.<\/p>\n
The group urged the police to revoke the status, because under
\nthe 1999 Press Law, an editor could not be declared a suspect for
\na report published by the media.<\/p>\n
The law says the responsibility in such a case rests with the
\nheads of the business and editorial sections.<\/p>\n
Taufik wrote an article that linked businessman Tomy Winata
\nwith the fire that engulfed Tanah Abang Market in Central Jakarta
\nin February. The report sparked anger among Tomy's supporters,
\nwho attacked the magazine's office and its journalists in
\nretaliation.<\/p>\n
The police has also declared Tempo chief editor Bambang
\nHarymurti a suspect in the case, and three of Tomy's confidants
\nfor the attack.<\/p>\n
Taufik had been jailed by former president Soeharto for
\nestablishing AJI, then a counter organization to the government-
\ncontrolled Indonesian Press Association (PWI). -- JP<\/p>",
