AJI journalists freed from jail on parole<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Two journalists of the unrecognized Independent
\nJournalists' Association (AJI), sentenced to three years in jail,
\nwere released Saturday, a spokeswoman for the Legal Aid Institute
\nsaid yesterday.<\/p>\n
Achmad Taufik and Eko Mariyadi were sent to jail in March 1995
\nafter being found guilty of slandering President Soeharto in
\ntheir articles in the unlicensed magazine, Suara Independen.<\/p>\n
AJI established the magazine in 1994 after the banning of
\nthree newsweeklies Tempo, DeTik and Editor.<\/p>\n
Dewi Novirianti told The Jakarta Post that Achmad Taufik and
\nEko Mariyadi were released on parole after they had applied for
\nit and served two-thirds of their jail sentences.<\/p>\n
Dewi said that Taufik had been detained in Kuningan
\npenitentiary in Jakarta while Eko had been in Cirebon
\npenitentiary in West Java.<\/p>\n
Another journalist who worked for the magazine, Danang Kukuh
\nWardoyo, regained his freedom in November 1996 after serving a
\n20-month jail sentence at Tangerang penitentiary.<\/p>\n
Dewi said that both journalists had been unsure whether their
\nrequests for parole would be authorized because they had feared
\nthey would be transferred and separated again in another
\npenitentiary.<\/p>\n
AJI secretary-general Satrio Arismunandar said yesterday that
\nhe had learned of their release but had not yet spoken to them.<\/p>\n
Satrio said they had originally been sentenced to two years
\nand eight months but received a three-year sentence when their
