AIT boss blasts RI's traffic management<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): President of the Alliance Internationale de
\nTouring (AIT) Paul A. Nouwen on Saturday criticized traffic
\nmanagement in Indonesia.<\/p>\n
Nouwen, who was in Bali to attend the opening of the AIT's
\nRegion II 13th general assembly, specifically pointed to the
\nabsence of separation between motorcycle and car lanes.<\/p>\n
This, he said, allows motorcycles and cars to freely overtake
\neach other.<\/p>\n
"In fact, this practice is very dangerous and not up to the
\nstandard international traffic regulations," he was quoted by
\nAntara as saying.<\/p>\n
Nouwen labeled traffic in Indonesia, especially in Bali, as
\ndisorder. He said Indonesia should learn from Malaysia, which has
\nseparate lanes for cars, motorcycles and bicycles.<\/p>\n
He advised that the Indonesian Motor Association (IMI) should
\nalso play an active role in traffic regulation.<\/p>\n
As an influential organization, the association could act as a
\nbridge between the public and the government. IMI can influence
\nthe public to purchase less pollutive vehicles, he said.<\/p>\n
He reasserted AIT's commitment to playing a more active role
\nin helping combat air pollution caused by traffic.<\/p>\n
In the Asia-Pacific region, AIT has about 19 million members
\nand the number is expected to steadily grow, he said. (pan)<\/p>",
