        "content": "<p>Airstrip on islet to be rebuilt<\/p>\n<p>The Jakarta Post, Jakarta<\/p>\n<p>In trying to boost tourism in Kepulauan Seribu regency, the City<br>\nCouncil has proposed the reconstruction of a 1,500-meter long<br>\nairstrip on Panjang islet -- one of the islets in the northern<br>\npart of the city.<\/p>\n<p>Council speaker Ade Surapriatna said the project would cost<br>\naround Rp 30 billion (US$3.3 million), which would come from the<br>\n2005 city budget.<\/p>\n<p>\"The islets have the potential to be developed as tourist<br>\nresorts. Therefore, the council will propose the reconstruction<br>\nof the airstrip as the first step to boost tourism there,\" Ade<br>\nannounced on Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p>He said the existing airstrip had been poorly maintained and<br>\nas a result needed repairing. Grass grows on many parts of the<br>\nairstrip, which was constructed during the Soeharto era.<\/p>\n<p>He believed the islets could generate a huge amount of revenue<br>\nif the city administration developed them into prestigious<br>\nresorts.<\/p>\n<p>According to Ade, poor transportation facilities deterred<br>\npeople from visiting the islets, and developing transportation<br>\nfacilities would overcome this problem.<\/p>\n<p>He expressed concern about frequent oil spills in the area,<br>\nand expressed hope that government, particularly the local<br>\nadministration, would resolve the problem. \"It will be homework<br>\nfor the next appointed regent,\" he added.<\/p>\n<p>A huge oil spill was discovered in the waters surrounding<br>\nPramuka and Panggang islets last week. The city administration<br>\nhas hinted that one of several offshore rigs there could be the<br>\nsource of the oil spill.<\/p>\n<p>The police have been investigating another oil spill in the<br>\nregency for almost eight months. They have questioned several<br>\nofficials of an oil company as witnesses, but none have been<br>\nnamed suspects.<\/p>\n<p>More than one million tourists visit the city annually. There<br>\nis no figure of tourists visiting Kepulauan Seribu regency, but<br>\nthe Jakarta Tourism Agency has reported that occupancy rates in<br>\nhotels on the resort islands have plunged by 70 percent on<br>\naverage over the past eight months.<\/p>\n<p>\"I hope the administration will be serious in developing the<br>\nislands. We must use the islands as sources of revenue,\" Ade<br>\nsaid, adding that the administration should ensure that owners of<br>\nislets and managements of tourist resorts pay their taxes.<\/p>",
