AirNav Monitors Anak Krakatau Activity, Prepares Flight Rerouting<\/p>\n

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - AirNav Indonesia continues to monitor Mount Anak\nKrakatau 24\/7 to anticipate the potential impact of an eruption on\nflight safety and efficiency. The monitoring is carried out in\ncollaboration with the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard\nMitigation (PVMBG) and the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics\nAgency (BMKG).<\/p>\n
\u201cMonitoring is conducted for the volcano eruption activity, wind\ndirection, and the possibility of volcanic material spreading that could\naffect flight routes,\u201d said Nurcahyo Utomo, the Director of Safety,\nSecurity, and Standardization at AirNav Indonesia in Tangerang, on\nFriday, September 11, 2026.<\/p>\n
He stated that, if necessary, AirNav would update information and\nadjust flight routes to avoid areas affected by volcanic activity.<\/p>\n
Nurcahyo stated that the steps taken so far involve rerouting or\nredirecting flight paths to avoid crossing potentially affected areas.\nHe noted that the current wind direction is moving away from\nSoekarno-Hatta Airport. It is hoped that this will not disrupt flight\noperations again.<\/p>\n
\u201cIf there is no significant information, usually within six hours.\nBut if suddenly there is something impactful, it might be updated in an\nhour,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
Nurcahyo emphasized that rerouting does not mean flights have to make\nextreme route changes. Aircraft are only directed slightly away from the\naffected areas. \u201cFor example, if a flight from Jakarta to Palembang were\nto pass through Tanjung Karang, it would need to veer slightly north.\nNot too far,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n
Currently, according to Nurcahyo, domestic flight routes in Indonesia\nare not directly affected by the eruption zone. The potential impact\nwould be greater for international flights passing through the area,\nincluding those from Australia to the Middle East.<\/p>\n
In addition to monitoring Mount Anak Krakatau activity, AirNav\nIndonesia is also regulating flight traffic to anticipate congestion\nafter flight operations resume.<\/p>\n
Nurcahyo explained that AirNav in the Soekarno-Hatta airspace has a\ncapacity of up to 81 flights per hour. Special arrangements are made\nduring the first two hours after operations resume to reduce congestion\nof aircraft in the airport parking area. \u201cBecause the parking area is\nfull. If we prioritize incoming flights, there will be no parking space.\nSo we prioritize clearing the parking area first, then accept incoming\nflights,\u201d he explained.<\/p>\n
In the first two hours after the resumption, AirNav regulated as many\nas 61 flights departing from Jakarta and 20 incoming flights. \u201cAfter the\nsituation is back under control, the subsequent flight traffic will\nfollow the normal pattern with a capacity of up to 81 flights per hour,\u201d\nsaid Nurcahyo.<\/p>\n
The eruption of Anak Krakatau volcano led to the cancellation of\nthousands of flights on September 6-7, 2026. No flights operated because\nSoekarno-Hatta Airport and several other airports were temporarily\nclosed due to volcanic ash from Mount Anak Krakatau.<\/p>\n
