Airforce: RI needs more radars<\/p>\n
YOGYAKARTA: The Indonesian Airforce reactivated its radar
\nsystem located in the west coast village of Congot, some 45
\nkilometers west of Yogyakarta, in a ceremony led by its chief Air
\nMarshal Hanafie Asnan on Friday.<\/p>\n
The Congot radar system was built in 1962 but has been
\ninactive since 1972 due to a shortage of spare parts.<\/p>\n
\"After being unused since 1972, the radar station has now been
\nreactivated. With a coverage of 250 kilometers, the Plesey radar
\ncan sense any object located on Christmas Island,\" Hanafie was
\nquoted by Antara news agency as saying.<\/p>\n
Aircraft coming from the south or from the Indian Ocean can be
\ndetected by the radar.<\/p>\n
The old Nysa radar could detect flying objects from a distance
\nof 200 kilometers.<\/p>\n
Hanafie said ideally more radars were needed to deal with the
\nincreasing number of foreign aircraft crossing into Indonesian
\nairspace.<\/p>\n
The Congot radar system is one of six Airforce radars
\nstationed along the south coast of Java. (sur)<\/p>",
