Airbase employee, soldier shot in police operation<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Depok police shot dead a 54-year-old man and
\ninjured another in a routine midnight street operation in Tonjong
\nsubdistrict of Bojong Gede early yesterday.<\/p>\n
The dead victim was later identified as Madjid, 54, a civil
\nservant at the local air base in Semplak Barat, and the injured
\nperson was a chief private from the Bogor-based Kujang infantry
\nbrigade, an officer said.<\/p>\n
Madjid was shot in the head, stomach, right arm and leg.<\/p>\n
The soldier suffered wounds in a hip and is being treated at
\nthe police hospital in Kramat Jati, East Jakarta.<\/p>\n
All the police officers are being questioned by Jakarta Police
\nInternal Affairs officers, who also supervise the Bogor Police.<\/p>\n
According to Second Lt. Sugeng H of the Internal Affairs unit,
\nthe preliminary investigation revealed that Madjid, a grandfather
\nof two, left his house at Kampung Lumbung shortly after midnight
\nwith two of his friends, including the soldier.<\/p>\n
They then hired a public transportation minivan.<\/p>\n
\"Their destination is still unclear,\" Sugeng said.<\/p>\n
In Tonjong the vehicle stalled so four people, including the
\ndriver and conductor, tried to restart the engine by pushing the
\nminivan from behind.<\/p>\n
The soldier, who was not in uniform, sat behind the steering
\nwheel, he said.<\/p>\n
\"The six patrolling officers then arrived at the scene, asking
\nthe five what was going on,\" Sugeng explained.<\/p>\n
They told the officers, who were all armed with rifles, that
\nthe minivan had broken down and they were trying to restart the
\nengine.<\/p>\n
When the officers asked the minivan driver to show the vehicle
\ndocuments, the latter failed to show proper papers, Sugeng said.<\/p>\n
They were then ordered to give a further explanation at the
\nDepok Police station.<\/p>\n
\"Shortly after the officers asked the five people to accompany
\nthem, the engine suddenly started and the five people tried to
\nescape,\" Sugeng said.<\/p>\n
After firing several warning shots in the air, the police
\nofficers aimed their guns at Madjid, who by then had got back
\ninto the minivan, and the person behind the steering wheel, he
\nsaid.<\/p>\n
Madjid's other companion managed to escape, while the driver
\nand conductor were dragged off to the Depok Police station for
\nfurther questioning. he said.<\/p>\n
\"The police officers would not have opened fire unless the
\npeople had done something wrong or resisted arrest,\" Sugeng
\nargued.<\/p>\n
According to one of Madjid's sons, who refused to be named,
\nhis father's companion who managed to escape turned up at the
\nfamily's house at about 4 a.m., a few hours after the shooting.<\/p>\n
The man, who remained anonymous, dropped by at the house to
\nhand over Madjid's cap that was covered in blood.<\/p>\n
Sugeng said Depok and Jakarta police are still compiling data
