'Air pollution is the worst problem'<\/p>\n
World Environment Day was commemorated on June 5, which, this
\nyear, focuses on efforts to conserve marine resources. In
\nconjunction with the commemoration, The Jakarta Post asked some
\npeople for their opinion on the quality of the city's environment
\nand what they do to protect it.<\/p>\n
Astuti, 37, works at a kiosk in front of Kramatjati Central
\nMarket, East Jakarta. She lives with her husband and three of her
\nchildren in Susukan, East Jakarta:<\/p>\n
Houses in slum areas, which are usually rented out, can look
\nless dirty if the owners work together with the tenants to keep
\nthem clean. Usually, owners, once they've leased the dwellings,
\ncouldn't care less about their cleanliness.<\/p>\n
Vendors of asinan (traditional, preserved, spicy mixed fruit)
\nlive on an alley that leads to my house and the area is always
\nlittered with discarded fruit peel. It's so bad during the rainy
\nseason, when it's wet and muddy, that I don't use that route
\nanymore.<\/p>\n
The neighborhood unit chief or the house owners should start a
\ncleanliness program in the neighborhood. If one person starts,
\nothers will surely follow.<\/p>\n
Sofyan, 27, is a salesperson at an electronics company in
\nSudirman, Central Jakarta. He lives with his parents in
\nManggarai, South Jakarta:<\/p>\n
The worst environmental problem in Jakarta is definitely air
\npollution. There are too many cars, not too mention old buses,
\nthat spew out thick black smoke.<\/p>\n
The government should replace the old buses with new ones. It
\nshould also reduce the number of cars, perhaps by limiting the
\nlength of time they can be used. But then again, as usual, will
\nsuch programs be carried out properly?<\/p>\n
Nevertheless, the government should produce regulations to
\ncover these matters and enforce them. You can't expect the public
\nto comply voluntarily as people these days are very ignorant
\nabout their surroundings.<\/p>\n
