Air pollution causes health problems<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Air pollution brings acute and chronic illness
\nto people, an expert at the University of Indonesia warned.<\/p>\n
Prof. Umar Fahmi Achmadi told a seminar on Healthy Cities for
\nthe People's Prosperity on Wednesday that people, who inhale
\npolluted air constantly for a long time usually suffer from
\ndifficult to diagnose diseases, Antara reported yesterday.<\/p>\n
\"Air pollution beyond the tolerable limits may disturb
\npeople's physiological functions and increase morbidity,\" the
\nprofessor said, citing as an example a couple found dead last
\nyear in a parked car with the air conditioner on and the windows
\nclosed. The air conditioner discharged carbon monoxide, which the
\ncouple inhaled for a prolonged period of time.<\/p>\n
In the long run, air pollution brings about respiratory system
\ndiseases, he added.<\/p>\n
According to the latest studies made by city's environment
\noffice, the content of sulfur dioxide in the city's air still
\nfalls within the tolerable range, Antara news agency reported.<\/p>\n
The studies revealed, however, that nitrogen oxide content in
\nthe air in Tebet Barat (South Jakarta), Gambir and Senayan
\n(Central Jakarta) exceeded tolerable limits at 7.9 percent, 3.3
\npercent and 4.2percent respectively.<\/p>\n
The air in Duri Kosambi (West Jakarta), Tebet Barat (South
\nJakarta), Pinang Ranti and Penggilingan (East Jakarta), Rawa
\nTerate, Cilincing and Ancol (North Jakarta) and Gambir, Kramat
\nPela and Senayan (Central Jakarta) contains too much dust, Fahmi
\nsaid.<\/p>\n
The one-day seminar, organized by the Committee of the 48th
\nWorld Health Day commemoration, involved 200 participants from
\nprivate organizations and from the Ministry of Health and the
\ncity administration.<\/p>\n
The Director General for Eradication of Contagious Diseases,
\nHadi M. Abednego, opened the seminar. (sur)<\/p>",
