Air Paradise to increase flights<\/p>\n
SANUR, Bali: Private airline Air Paradise International (API)
\nis planning to increase its flights between Denpasar and a number
\nof Australian cities, API's president has said.<\/p>\n
\"We serve flights between Denpasar and Perth, Sydney and
\nMelbourne three times a week, and this will be increased to four
\nor five times a week,\" I Gde Wiranatha said here on Thursday.<\/p>\n
API began operating in February with an Airbus 310 and it
\nplans to purchase more aircraft, he said.<\/p>\n
The load factor for the Australian route has reached 70
\npercent, rising to 80 percent to 85 percent during peak seasons,
\nhe said.<\/p>\n
He said API will also start serving the Denpasar-Seoul route
\nthrice weekly, beginning July 17. -- Antara<\/p>\n
Pertamina to hold Iraq project<\/p>\n
On Iraq, Indonesia's state-owned oil and gas company,
\nPertamina, will put on hold its exploration project in the
\nwestern desert, as \"there is no Iraq government and we are not in
\ntouch with Iraq,\" Purnomo said.<\/p>\n
Pertamina was among several foreign companies awarded rights
\nbefore the war to explore the western desert, a largely untapped
\narea that lies on the border with Saudi Arabia and Jordan.<\/p>\n
The Asian Wall Street Journal in a report on Thursday quoted
\nSalim Razouki, general director of exploration at the
\nreconstituted Iraqi oil ministry, as saying that talks are
\ncontinuing with foreign oil companies over exploration contracts
\nin the western desert.<\/p>\n
\"Indonesia will wait and see\" with regards to the commencement
\nof oil exploration in the western desert, Purnomo said. -- Dow

Chinese chainstore heads to Europe<\/p>\n
SHANGHAI: China's largest retail chainstore, the Shanghai
\nLianhua Supermarket, has been approved to set up a subsidiary in
\nBelgium, state press said on Thursday.<\/p>\n
\"This will make us the first indigenous chain store to explore
\nthe European market,\" president Wang Zongnan was quoted as saying
\nby the Xinhua news agency.<\/p>\n
With the subsidiary company as a bridgehead to the European
\nmarket, the supermarket giant plans to use its domestic
\nprocurement network to export Chinese-made products.<\/p>\n
It also plans to set up a distribution company specializing in
\nthe export and import business to bring back European products
\nmeeting the demands of Chinese customers, Wang said.<\/p>\n
Wang added that the move would strengthen the company's
\ncompetitive edge and quicken the development of the domestic
\nchainstore sector.<\/p>\n
Shanghai Lianhua Supermarket has 2,000 stores in China which
\nraked in sales of 18.33 billion yuan (US$2.2 billion) in 2002. --

HSBC to cut 1,400 jobs<\/p>\n
LONDON: British banking group HSBC said on Wednesday it plans
\nto cut 1,400 jobs by the end of the year, of which about half
\nwill be through layoffs.<\/p>\n
Most of the job cuts will be at branches in London,
\nSouthampton and Birmingham, a group spokeswoman said.<\/p>\n
\"This is a painful decision for any business but one we have
\nto make to ensure our future competitiveness,\" chief executive
\nBill Dalton said.<\/p>\n
Dalton said the job cuts would cost HSBC around 1.5 million
\npounds (2.2 million euros, US$2.5 million).<\/p>\n
Rob O'Neill, national secretary of the banking union UNIFI,
\nsaid he was concerned about the timeframe for the job cuts and
\nrejected any forced redundancies.<\/p>\n
\"If the bank stick rigidly to their proposed timescale and
\ncannot reassure those staff remaining about future workloads,
\nthis will be seen as no more than a cost-cutting exercise
\ndesigned to get people off the books before the end of the year

Cisco moves testing lab from Sydney<\/p>\n
SINGAPORE: Computer Networking giant Cisco Systems moved its
\nAsia-Pacific testing laboratory to Singapore to be nearer Japan
\nand other major Asian markets, executives said on Wednesday.<\/p>\n
The U.S.-based Cisco spent US$40 million to set up the Asia-
\nPacific Network Solutions Integrated Test Engineering (NSITE)
\nlab.<\/p>\n
Ed Carney, vice president of NSITE labs, said at the launch
\nthe city-state is \"ideally located,\" for the lab as it is much
\nnearer the company's key customers in Asia.<\/p>\n
Asian customers last year accounted for $3.78 billion, or a
\nfifth of Cisco's total revenue.<\/p>\n
The Singapore lab is the only one in Asia and joins two in the
\nUnited States and three in Europe.<\/p>\n
The lab aims to address specific client needs which differ
