        "content": "<p>Air Lanka privatization<\/p>\n<p>COLOMBO (AFP): Sri Lanka yesterday announced it was entering<br>\ninto talks with the Dubai-based Emirates airline to sell 40<br>\npercent of its national carrier, Air Lanka, under a privatization<br>\nplan.<\/p>\n<p>The privatization authority here said it will hold<br>\nnegotiations exclusively with Emirates on the sale of Air Lanka<br>\nafter evaluating proposals from seven companies but gave no time-<br>\nframe for concluding a deal.<\/p>\n<p>Sri Lanka hopes to retain a 51-percent stake in Air Lanka so<br>\nthat the airline will enjoy \"national carrier\" status and qualify<br>\nfor concessions offered bilaterally. Nine percent of shares are<br>\nto be given to employees.<\/p>\n<p>AirLanka is currently reeling under huge debt which has<br>\naffected modernization plans.<\/p>",
