Air conditioners offer healing and decorative functions<\/p>\n

Dozens of air conditioning units of various brands are
\ndisplayed at a showroom on Jl. Fatmawati, South Jakarta. Three
\nmen looked busy, tidying up the electronic merchandise in the
\nspacious store.<\/p>\n
The store not only sells air conditioner, but also offers
\nrefrigerators, washing machines and television sets from numerous
\nmanufacturers like Panasonic, Samsung, Hitachi, Toshiba, Modena,
\nSanyo, General, LG, Dast, Mitsubishi and Daikin.<\/p>\n
As the three men busily prepared for customers, two men came
\nand looked around the shop. They were looking for an air
\nconditioner.<\/p>\n
\"People come for air conditioners equipped with anti-bacteria
\nsystems. They forget about the conventional ones, although they
\nare cheaper,\" said Acaon, a shop attendant at Mega Jaya Shop on
\nJl. Fatmawati.<\/p>\n
The growing number of electronics manufacturers that produce
\nair conditioners has created a climate of stiff competition.<\/p>\n
This has prompted manufacturers to produce a range of
\ndifferent air conditioners aimed at different market segments.
\nThey are now equipping their air conditioners with more
\nfunctions.<\/p>\n
Today, an air conditioner is not only a device to produce
\nfresh or cool air for a room. Air conditioners, or AC, are now
\nequipped with devices to kill air-borne bacteria.<\/p>\n
Other manufacturers work on the design. They create design so
\nthat an AC unit is beautiful enough to decorate the house.<\/p>\n
\"People used to purchase AC units of a certain brand. They
\ncorrelate brands with quality. But today, they purchase AC units
\nthat have more functions,\" said Acaon, who has been working at
\nthe retail store for 20 years.<\/p>\n
Acaon added that customers look for AC that can also prevent
\nbacteria, neutralize cigarette smoke and deodorize bad smells.<\/p>\n
Didi, a sales executive at Abadi Jaya Shop in Bendungan Hilir,
\nCentral Jakarta, also gave a similar view.<\/p>\n
\"Our customers often seek AC units with 'Plasmacluster'
\ntechnology, that is the technology that purifies the air,\" Didi
\ntold The Jakarta Post at his store.<\/p>\n
With the rapid growth in technology, it is now easier for
\ncustomers to find an AC with latest technology, be it air-
\npurifying Plasmacluster technology, or anti-bacteria devices.<\/p>\n
Artistic touches can also enhance the appearance of the air
\nconditioning unit. One AC product with artistic panels comes from
\nLG Electronics.<\/p>\n
Widi Nugroho, head of LG Electronics Indonesia's public
\nrelations department, said that the AC unit with the artistic
\npanel is once of their latest products.<\/p>\n
The artistic AC, under the name Artcool Wide, displays
\nattractive images, like calligraphy or an image of the Al Haram
\nMosque in Mecca.<\/p>\n
With price tag of around Rp 10 million (a standard AC is sold
\nfor Rp 2 million), Artcool Wide is somewhat like a painting hung
\nonto the wall. A painting that has another function besides
\nsimply cooling the air.<\/p>\n
Artcool is also equipped with a \"three-dimensional\" cooling
\nsystem that enables the AC to give air flow from three sides: the
\nfront, right and left side. Thus, it offers a better distribution
\nof cool air throughout the room.<\/p>\n
According to Widi, the product also used new technology called
\n\"Nano Carbon Filter\" that can absorb smells ten times faster than
\nany other AC product, and the Neo Plasma Filter can also kill
\ninfluenza virus and bacteria.<\/p>\n
\"There is no electronic manufacturer that cares for customers
\nlike we do,\" Widi asserted.<\/p>\n
With the rapid developments in technology, ACs are no longer
\njust an air cooling device.<\/p>",
