AIDS victim ostracized<\/p>\n
MALANG, East Java: The Malang Regency office has launched an
\ninvestigation into reports that a woman who has AIDS and gave
\nbirth last month has now been ostracized by fellow villagers.<\/p>\n
"We're sending a team to Baturetno village," Malang Regent
\nAbdul Hamid was quoted by the Antara news agency as saying.<\/p>\n
Baturetno village chief Trisno Sunardi said most villagers
\nrejected the presence of the woman, identified by Antara by her
\ninitials Mrs. Sul.<\/p>\n
The woman, a former prostitute, earlier tested positive for
\nhuman immunodeficiency virus (HIV) which causes AIDS. Intending
\nto go ahead with her pregnancy, she and her husband returned to
\ntheir home village. She gave birth last month and is under close
\nobservation by local doctors.<\/p>\n
The Malang regency office now plans to send a medical team to
\nthe village to correct the villagers' misperception about AIDS.
\nMost fear that the virus could spread by simply being close to
\nher.<\/p>",
