AIDS follows heroin routes<\/p>\n
YOGYAKARTA: Asian countries, including Indonesia, have been
\nurged to step up moves to curb the spread of the Human Immuno-
\nDeficiency Virus (HIV)\/Acquired Immuno-Deficiency Syndrome
\n(AIDS), which according to the latest survey goes hand-in-hand
\nwith the trafficking of heroin.<\/p>\n
Samudra W. Nasution of the AIDS Alert Foundation said that the
\nphenomenon had been detected in several countries bordering
\nMyanmar, including China, India and Vietnam.<\/p>\n
A recent study had also found similar causes of HIV along the
\nheroin trafficking routes stretching to China, India and Vietnam,
\nand even to the United States, Samudra was quoted by Antara as
\nsaying on Wednesday.<\/p>\n
Indonesia is feared to become trapped in the circle if it
\nfails to curb drug trafficking and other factors that cause the
\nspread of AIDS spread, he added.<\/p>\n
\"Although there has been no study conducted on it, initial
\nindications have been found in several towns, such as Sorong,
\nMedan and Surabaya,\" Samudra said.<\/p>\n
