AIDS awareness campaign planned<\/p>\n
JAKARTA: The government will cooperate with non-governmental
\norganizations to launch a nationwide campaign against HIV\/AIDS as
\nthe number of people with the deadly virus has reached an
\nalarming level, health minister Achmad Suyudi said on Thursday.<\/p>\n
According to ministry data, 1,904 Indonesians have tested
\npositive for Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV), while 671 people
\nhave tested positive for Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome
\n(AIDS), half of whom have died.<\/p>\n
Suyudi said that the figures were derived from people having
\nthemselves tested, while the actual number of people with HIV
\ncould range between 80,000 and 120,000, most notably in Papua,
\nRiau, West Java and Bali.<\/p>\n
More public involvement is expected after the national
\ncampaign, which Suyudi estimates will cost around Rp 200 billion
\na year, including medical assistance for those infected.<\/p>\n
The technicalities of the campaign have still to be discussed,
\nsuch as the issuance of government regulations, fund-raising, as
\nwell as obtaining the required medicines for those infected with
