Habibie will<br>\nrespect Singapore if it respects him, the Sunday Times newspaper<br>\nquoted a presidential aide as saying.<\/p>\n<p>Tensions between the neighboring countries have grown since<br>\nHabibie last week accused Singapore of racism, saying that ethnic<br>\nMalays were under-represented in the city-state's military.<\/p>\n<p>Singapore politicians responded by accusing Habibie of trying<br>\nto stir up ethnic divisions on the island state.<\/p>\n<p>The paper quoted Habibie aide Umar Juoro as saying Habibie's<br>\nremarks stemmed from residual resentment about criticisms made by<br>\nSingapore Senior Minister Lee Kuan Yew last year.<\/p>\n<p>Lee said in February last year that market unhappiness with<br>\nHabibie's likely appointment as vice-president would lead to<br>\nhigher inflation, more bankruptcies and greater unemployment in<br>\nIndonesia.<\/p>",
