AI technology is being used to assist doctors in the early detection of lung cancer by identifying small nodules in the lungs that may be cancerous. This technology can help to improve the efficiency of lung cancer screening and diagnosis, especially in identifying potentially malignant nodules at an early stage.

Jakarta (ANTARA) - The use of artificial intelligence (AI) technology
is considered to be able to help doctors detect lung cancer early by
marking nodules or small lumps in the lungs that have the potential to
develop into malignancy.

“In chest X-ray examinations, AI-based systems can help mark areas
suspected of being lung nodules that require further evaluation through
CT scans for more detailed characterization,” said Radiologist
Specialist, dr. Dewi Tantra Hardiyanto, Sp.Rad, at the World Cancer Day
Media Conference entitled ‘Transformation of Cancer Screening and
Diagnosis with AI’ in Jakarta, Wednesday.

This detection, according to Dewi, allows patients to be directed
more quickly and accurately for further examination.

In the collaboration event between AstraZeneca Indonesia and Siloam
International Hospitals, she said that in chest X-ray examinations,
AI-based systems can help mark areas suspected of being lung nodules for
further evaluation using CT scans.

Dewi also explained that not all lung nodules are cancerous. Some
nodules are benign and do not require aggressive action. Doctors will
assess the shape, size, and patient’s risk factors to determine the
level of suspicion, with clinical decisions remaining in the hands of
medical personnel.

Meanwhile, Thoracic Oncology Subspecialist, dr. Sita Laksmi Andarini,
Ph.D., Sp.P(K), said that screening with the help of AI can help the
process of detecting lung cancer more efficiently, especially in
identifying nodules that have the potential to be malignant at an early
stage.

“In this case, the process of screening for lung diseases, especially
lung cancer, with the help of AI technology can help doctors to carry
out detection more efficiently,” said the doctor who is a member of the
Indonesian Oncology Association of DKI Jakarta.

Based on GLOBOCAN 2020 data, lung cancer ranks third as the type of
cancer with the largest number of new cases in Indonesia. Many cases are
diagnosed at an advanced stage because the initial symptoms are often
not specific or resemble common respiratory disorders.
",
