The rise of Google's AI Overviews is fundamentally altering how users access information, with data indicating a drastic reduction in clicks to external websites. This shift towards 'zero-click search' threatens the economic model of the web, forcing publishers to adapt as Google transforms from a gateway into an answer provider. The technology has now expanded globally, including to Indonesia, raising concerns about factual accuracy and the sustainability of digital content creation.

The way people consume information online is at a crucial turning
point. You may have noticed that recently, answers to your questions on
Google appear instantly at the very top without needing to open any
website.

This phenomenon is not merely a feature update, but a paradigm shift
known as zero-click search.

Google is now increasingly relying on artificial intelligence (AI) to
provide direct answers on the search page. Through its AI Overviews and
AI Mode features, the technology giant is transforming from a mere
“gateway” into an “answer provider”.

Google even claims that AI Mode represents one of the most
fundamental changes to the Search experience in the past 25 years,
enabling more natural and complex interactions.

This behavioural change is not just an assumption. Based on the
latest data from Pew Research Center, which analysed the browsing
activity of 900 adults in the United States, the presence of AI on the
search page is drastically reducing users’ intention to visit source
websites. The findings paint a worrying picture for website owners and
content publishers.

For two decades, the internet economy was built on an unwritten
agreement: Google indexes content, and in return, Google sends traffic
(visitors) to those sites.

However, with AI-powered search, Google is now beginning to compile
answers itself by extracting information from various sources across the
internet.

French media outlet Le Monde has highlighted that this development
has the potential to damage the web’s economic ecosystem.

Publishers are now not only competing to rank on the first page, but
must also struggle to have their content “selected” by AI algorithms as
the basis for answers, even though the chance of receiving a direct
click is very small.

Despite offering convenience, this technology is not free from
criticism. A report from Business Insider revealed complaints from a
number of business owners regarding the inaccuracy of AI Overviews.
Often, AI mixes information from irrelevant sources or even presents
factually incorrect data, which can harm business reputations and
mislead users.

On the other hand, the world of Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is
being forced to evolve. Digital strategies can no longer rely solely on
keywords. To remain relevant in the AI era, site owners must focus on
building authority, producing original data, and creating content that
AI systems deem trustworthy enough to cite.

This trend has reached the local market. Google has expanded its AI
Mode feature globally, including to Indonesia. The feature already
supports Bahasa Indonesia and is designed to handle more in-depth
questions as well as provide real-time data.

The era of zero-click search demands a new balance between user
convenience and the sustainability of the information ecosystem. The
greatest challenge for Google and other technology giants is ensuring
that the efficiency offered by AI does not kill the creativity of
content creators, who are the primary source of energy for the internet
itself.
",
