Artificial Intelligence giants are beginning to shift their
perspectives on the technology they themselves created. A number of
companies are now openly voicing deep concerns regarding the future
existential risks of AI.

OpenAI’s Head of Global Policy, Cris Lehane, revealed that his
company is currently establishing close cooperation with its primary
competitors, such as Anthropic and Alphabet, to discuss AI safety
standards. These intensive discussions have been ongoing for several
weeks.

“It is better to try and work together to prioritise safety,” said
Lehane, as quoted by Reuters on Wednesday.

Lehane also emphasised that OpenAI is prepared to provide full
support for government regulations aimed at suppressing and mitigating
various negative risks resulting from AI development when addressing
members of parliament.

Tech Bosses Begin to Fear

For some time now, a wave of warnings from key figures in the
technology industry has continued to flow. Anthropic CEO, Dario Amodei,
previously called for the pace of advanced AI development to be slowed
through an essay titled “We Must Pace the Frontier.”

According to Amodei, the pace of AI progress has accelerated
significantly since the summer of 2026, particularly because AI systems
are now continuously demonstrating autonomous capabilities in creating
the next, more sophisticated generations of AI.

This call is also supported by OpenAI CEO, Sam Altman. Altman stated
that his company intends to adopt Anthropic’s proposal to involve
independent evaluators who are granted access levels equal to internal
employees to ensure safety aspects are addressed.

Long before this trend of concern became widespread, Altman had
actually warned of similar potential dangers back in 2015 through his
essay titled “Machine Intelligence, Part 1.” At that time, he warned
that the greatest threat from this technology would occur when machine
intelligence truly surpasses the capacity of human control.

In line with other industry leaders, the head of SpaceX and xAI, Elon
Musk, has also expressed his support for Dario Amodei’s views.
Previously, in 2023, Musk even supported a petition from the non-profit
Future of Life Institute urging a six-month pause on AI development.

Such a drastic step is considered essential to provide space for the
international community to develop mature safety guardrails before AI
technology evolves beyond control.
",
