Artificial intelligence is increasingly being adopted by micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) in Indonesia, not as a replacement for human roles but as a business assistant. The technology helps automate routine tasks such as marketing content creation, sales data analysis, and customer service, allowing business owners to focus on strategy and innovation. Real-world examples show AI improving production forecasting, inventory management, and market reach for local bakeries, fashion sellers, and coffee shops.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is becoming increasingly familiar in
daily life. Many people know it as a tool for writing, drawing, or
creating social media content. For micro, small, and medium enterprises
(MSMEs), AI is even starting to be used to create promotional materials,
reply to customer messages, and generate marketing ideas. Unfortunately,
there is still a perception that AI is only useful for content creation
or that it will replace human workers. For most MSMEs, however, AI is
more accurately viewed as a business assistant—a tool that helps
complete routine tasks, provides information, and supports
decision-making, while ultimate control remains with the business owner.
This perspective is important because the success of MSMEs in the
digital era is not determined by how advanced the technology they use
is, but by their ability to utilise technology to work more effectively
and deliver added value to customers.

Unlike large corporations with clear divisions of labour, most MSMEs
are run by very small teams. Many businesses are managed directly by the
owner alongside a few employees. In a single day, an MSME owner can act
as production manager, marketing manager, social media admin, cashier,
raw material buyer, and customer service officer. Amidst this busy
schedule, they must also think about strategies to grow their business.
As a result, much administrative work consumes valuable time.
Promotional ideas are often delayed, sales reports go unanalysed, and
business decisions end up being based more on estimates than on data.
This is where AI can act as a business assistant—not to take over the
business, but to help complete routine tasks so that owners have more
time to think about truly strategic matters.

AI’s role in MSMEs is closely tied to everyday activities. In
marketing, AI can help draft social media content ideas, create
attractive product descriptions, or design a monthly promotional
calendar. Tasks that previously took hours can now be completed in
minutes. In administration, AI can assist in drafting offer letters,
creating meeting summaries, or tidying up documents. Operationally, AI
can help analyse sales data, forecast stock requirements, and recommend
the best times to purchase raw materials. In customer service, AI can
help draft initial responses to frequently asked questions, with the
business owner still reviewing and adjusting the replies to match the
business’s character. With AI handling routine work, entrepreneurs can
focus more on innovation, product quality improvement, and market
development.

Consider a bakery MSME that must decide daily how much bread to
produce. Previously, decisions were based on experience, often leading
to overproduction and waste on some days, or stock shortages on others.
By using AI to analyse past sales data, the owner can obtain more
accurate production forecasts, reducing waste and increasing profits.
Another example is a fashion MSME selling through a marketplace; AI can
help draft product descriptions, identify trending clothing models, and
recommend the best times to upload promotions, saving the owner from
spending hours on manual data analysis. A local coffee shop can use AI
to analyse its most popular menu items, forecast raw material needs
before the weekend, and even design promotional programmes based on
customer visit patterns. Local artisans can also use AI to translate
product catalogues into multiple languages, expanding their
opportunities to reach international markets. These examples show that
AI is not just for large corporations; with the right approach, MSMEs
can also reap its benefits.

One of AI’s greatest strengths is its ability to process data into
easily understandable information. Sales figures, stock levels, and
customer reviews can be summarised into insights that support
decision-making. For instance, AI can help identify the best-selling
products, pinpoint peak sales periods, or detect recurring patterns in
customer complaints. This information helps business owners set
improvement priorities and formulate more precise business strategies.
Data-driven decisions are generally more accurate than those relying
solely on intuition. For MSMEs, this capability can improve operational
efficiency while reducing the risk of errors.

Despite its many advantages, AI has limitations. This technology
lacks life experience, empathy, intuition, and the ability to understand
cultural values like a human. AI may be able to compose an attractive
promotional sentence, but it cannot build an emotional relationship with
a customer. AI can analyse sales data, but it does not fully understand
the reasons behind a customer’s decision. AI can provide various
alternative solutions, but the final decision still requires human
judgement. Therefore, AI should be seen as a tool that strengthens the
role of the entrepreneur, not as a replacement.
",
