Democratic Party chairman Agus Harimurti Yudhoyono (AHY) has reminded\nall parties not to treat power as something that can be held without\nlimits. According to him, power is a mandate from the people that has a\ntime limit and must be exercised with accountability to the people\u2019s\nwill.<\/p>\n
\u201cPower does not belong to anyone forever; power is a trust from the\npeople that has a time limit,\u201d AHY said in a speech at the 25th\nanniversary of the Democratic Party on Saturday (5\/9).<\/p>\n
For this reason, AHY stressed that the political rights of the public\nmust not be restricted. He called for the right of every citizen to vote\nand to stand for election to remain guaranteed as an important part of\ndemocratic life. \u201cDo not obstruct the people\u2019s right to vote and to be\nelected,\u201d he asserted.<\/p>\n
In addition, AHY argued that democracy should not be narrowed merely\nto the holding of general elections. Democracy, he said, is also\nsupported by accountable government, laws trusted by the public, freedom\nof the press and civil society, and healthy checks and balances.\n\u201cDemocracy must not stop at the procedures and holding of elections,\u201d\nAHY said.<\/p>\n
According to him, a healthy democracy still requires a strong and\neffective government. However, the strength of the government must go\nhand in hand with openness to criticism, respect for differences,\nadherence to the law, and a willingness to be accountable for every\ndecision to the people.<\/p>\n
\u201cA healthy democracy requires a strong and effective government,\nwhile also being open to criticism, respecting differences, upholding\nthe law, and always ready to be accountable for every decision to the\npeople,\u201d AHY said.<\/p>\n
AHY also reminded of the importance of safeguarding the values of\nReformasi in every election. He stressed that political competition must\ntake place honestly, fairly, freely and democratically. \u201cElections must\nbe honest, fair, free and democratic,\u201d he asserted.<\/p>\n
To ensure these principles are upheld, AHY called on the TNI, Polri,\nintelligence agencies, law enforcement, the civil service (ASN) and all\nstate apparatus to maintain professionalism and neutrality in elections.\n\u201cThe TNI, Polri, intelligence agencies, law enforcement, ASN and all\nstate apparatus must be professional and neutral,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
He also reminded that state facilities and resources must not be used\nfor practical political interests. According to him, all state\nfacilities should be returned to their primary function of serving the\npublic interest. \u201cState facilities must be used for the people\u2019s\ninterests, not for practical political interests,\u201d AHY said.<\/p>\n
Furthermore, AHY stressed the need to ensure that all election\nparticipants receive fair treatment. He argued that political victory\nmust be born from the mandate and trust of the people, not from the use\nof power or state facilities.<\/p>\n
\u201cEvery election participant must receive fair treatment. Whoever wins\nmust win because they have gained the people\u2019s trust, and whoever loses\nmust respect the people\u2019s will,\u201d AHY said.<\/p>\n
In his speech, AHY invited the Democratic Party to draw lessons from\nthe party\u2019s experience both in government and in opposition. He\nspecifically mentioned the 10 years of the administration of Indonesia\u2019s\n6th president, Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono (SBY), including the transition\nof power that took place after two terms in office.<\/p>\n
