In Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia reports that Agus Harimurti Yudhoyono
(AHY), the Coordinating Minister for Infrastructure and Regional
Development, has stressed the importance of digital transformation in
Indonesia’s infrastructure development. He says that using digital
technology is seen as a way to accelerate the realisation of sustainable
infrastructure.

“Digital transformation is not a luxury but a necessity. From smart
cities to intelligent transport systems, digital technology enables us
to optimise resources, enhance security, and improve service delivery,”
he said at the World Engineering Day for Sustainable Development (WED)
2026, on Wednesday 4 March 2026.

Through digital transformation, the government aims to leverage
technologies including artificial intelligence (AI), Big Data, remote
sensing, and digital twins to optimise planning and operations for
infrastructure development. These technologies bring several benefits,
such as predictive maintenance, cost efficiency, and increased
resilience of infrastructure to climate risks.

In the transport sector, AHY noted that digital technology will
improve logistics efficiency and reduce carbon emissions. In housing,
data-based digital approaches enable more inclusive and affordable
housing solutions. In public works, sensor-based digital monitoring will
improve occupational safety.

With this transformation, AHY hopes engineers will adapt to the
shifting trends. “The engineers of the future are not only builders but
also data analysts, systems thinkers, and innovators,” he said.

Moreover, AHY stated that Indonesia needs more human resources with
leadership in sustainable engineering. Simply understanding technology
is not enough, as sustainable development requires capable people.
“Engineers must be equipped not only with technical skills but also with
ethical judgement, multidisciplinary perspectives, and global awareness.
We must invest in education, professional standards, and lifelong
learning,” he clarified.

He also stressed the importance of empowering young engineers,
including women and underrepresented communities. Ultimately, all
stakeholders should strengthen collaboration among academia, industry,
and government. “In this regard, organisations such as the World
Federation of Engineering Organizations and our national body such as
the Persatuan Insinyur Indonesia (PII) play very important roles,” he
concluded.
",
