Agum vows to name committed people to PSSI<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): National congress members from the All-
\nIndonesian Soccer Federation (PSSI) officially elected Agum
\nGumelar to serve a four-year term at the end of their three-day
\ncongress on Wednesday.<\/p>\n
Soon after his election at Hotel Indonesia in Central Jakarta,
\nAgum told a news conference that he would select committed
\nassistants in PSSI to improve the condition of national soccer.<\/p>\n
He said both familiar and new members would be on the
\ncommittee.<\/p>\n
Agum, who was considered the only strong candidate to head the
\n69-year-old federation, will receive a maximum of 30 days to set
\nup his executive board committee. Agum replaced Azwar Anas as
\nPSSI chief for 1995 to 1999 in October last year.<\/p>\n
\"My decision on the committee's members might not be to
\neverybody's wishes, but I will try to minimalize any
\ndissatisfaction. It's impossible for me to totally renew the
\ncommittee because some former members are still needed to
\naccomplish the program,\" he said.<\/p>\n
\"I don't want the federation to totter.\"<\/p>\n
He added that he would seek input from soccer experts to
\nselect the right people to help him implement the PSSI guidelines
\nendorsed on Wednesday.<\/p>\n
\"My eyes and ears are open to understand people's
\naspirations,\" said Agum, who is also the governor of the National
\nResilience Institute (Lemhanas).<\/p>\n
Agum said he would ask government agencies to help finance
\nsoccer development in their respective areas.<\/p>\n
At the end of the congress, accountant Asep Suryana and the
\nformer director of national cement manufacturer PT Semen Gresik,
\nSabar Safaruddin, were appointed as members of PSSI's auditors.<\/p>\n
The congress' other recommendations included the setting up of
\nprovincial chapters to replace provincial boards of
\ncommissioners, the plan to create two national soccer teams to
\nrecruit talented players from outside Java and the changing of
\nPSSI's name to the Football Association of Indonesia.<\/p>\n
The guidelines will be specified in the work plan by the new
\nmembers of the executive board committees and representatives
\nfrom provincial chapters.<\/p>\n
Despite the criticism from local media that congress members
\nlacked fresh ideas to reform the federation but merely signed off
\non the proposals from the outgoing PSSI working committees,
\ncongress deputy organizer Tondo Widodo expressed his satisfaction
\nthat the event proceeded \"smoothly\".<\/p>\n
The meeting, which was scheduled to end in the evening, was
\nexpedited to end before the afternoon. Many sports reporters were
\ndismayed to find the meeting room empty when they arrived after
\nlunch time.<\/p>\n
Tondo said that the recommendations from the two commissions
\nwere accepted in a plenary meeting on Wednesday morning without
\nsignificant objection from the members. The participants also
\nimmediately agreed to elect Agum as chairman. (ivy)<\/p>",
