AGO to review Akbar verdict<\/p>\n
MEDAN: The Attorney General's Office is considering filing a
\njudicial review against the Supreme Court's verdict that
\nacquitted Golkar chairman and House Speaker Akbar Tandjung of all
\ncorruption charges.<\/p>\n
\"The team that studies the case will soon decide whether or
\nnot to file a judicial review,\" Deputy Attorney General for
\nSpecial Crimes Iswahyudi told reporters in Medan, North Sumatra,
\non Friday.<\/p>\n
Iswahyudi said the team, which consists of 13 prosecutors and
\nlegal experts, was examining the case.<\/p>\n
Last month, the Supreme Court acquitted Akbar of all charges
\nin graft case, overturning the lower courts' verdicts.<\/p>\n
The Central Jakarta District Court sentenced Akbar to three
\nyears in jail for his role in a graft case involving Rp 40
\nbillion (US$4.7 million) of the State Logistics Agency allocated
\nfor a rice-for-poor program.<\/p>\n
The Supreme Court argued that Akbar was merely following the
\ninstruction of his then superior former president B.J. Habibie,
\neven though the funds were never used to buy basic commodities.
