AGO mulls banning new communist book<\/p>\n
JAKARTA: Authorities here said Thursday they are deciding whether
\na new autobiography by the daughter of a former communist leader
\ncontains outlawed Marxist ideology and should be banned.<\/p>\n
\"We are currently investigating the contents of the book and
\nwhether it can be read publicly,\" said Barman Zahir, a spokesman
\nfor the Attorney General's Office.<\/p>\n
Vice President Hamzah Haz - who heads the country's largest
\nMuslim party - alleges that the recently published book \"I Am
\nProud to be a Child of the Indonesia Communist Party\" (PKI)
\ncontains Marxist ideology and has urged prosecutors to get it
\nbanned.<\/p>\n
Its author, Ribka Tjiptaning Proletariyati, denies it
\npropagates communism and says the book documents the persecution
\nof her family by the right-wing military government of ex-
\ndictator Soeharto in the 1970s and 1980s.<\/p>\n
Ribka's father was an activist in the Central Java branch of
\nthe now-defunct PKI. As a successful businessman, he also
\nsupported the party financially.<\/p>\n
He was arrested and spent seven years without trial in jail,
\nwhere he was repeatedly tortured. --AP<\/p>",
