Agency to distribute insecticide<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): The City Health Agency, stretched to contain an
\noutbreak of mosquito-borne dengue fever, will distribute
\ninsecticide and continue fumigation in subdistricts with known
\nhigh mosquito infestation.<\/p>\n
Head of the agency's animal-related disease section Tini
\nSuryanti said on Friday the plan was adopted because there were
\nincreasing reports of people suffering from the disease.<\/p>\n
The agency recorded a total of 3,044 cases, with 16
\nfatalities, during the past three months. \"The number of cases
\nhas tripled, while the number of fatalities is double the figure
\nof the same period last year,\" Tini said.<\/p>\n
Data also show that 55 subdistricts in the capital have been
\ncategorized as \"sources\" of dengue fever. \"Our efforts to conduct
\nfumigation and provide insecticide to kill mosquitoes' eggs in
\nstagnant water will be focused on those areas.\"<\/p>\n
She said the insecticide would be used in houses and public
\nareas which were difficult to clean, such as abandoned residences
\nand public facilities. \"The insecticide will effectively kill the
\neggs for a period of three months.\"<\/p>\n
The agency has allocated Rp 600 million for insecticide and Rp
\n1 billion for fumigation.<\/p>\n
The insecticide, available at community health centers, will
\nbe dispensed free of charge to the public.<\/p>\n
Tini urged the public to strengthen cooperation with officials
\nin charge of public areas to take preventive measures, such as
\nkeeping the areas clean, to break the life cycle of the
\nmosquitoes.<\/p>\n
\"All the insecticide won't do any good when garbage is still
\nstrewn all over, allowing mosquitoes to breed. Hence, we appeal
\nto the general public to keep their living environment and areas
\nclean.\"<\/p>\n
She said cooperation was established with the City Land
\nTransportation Agency, PD Pasar Jaya, which manages markets in
\nthe capital, and public offices to ensure the implementation of
\nthe \"3M Movement\". The preventative measures are the scrubbing
\nand closing of household water tanks and buckets, and the burying
\nof used cans.<\/p>\n
She urged the public to follow the example of the East Java
\ncity of Sidoarjo, which has been successful in containing dengue
\nwithout using insecticide.<\/p>\n
\"People in Sidoarjo worked together to reduce the cases of
\ndengue and they did not depend on the use of insecticide,\" she
\nsaid.<\/p>\n
\"Officials in West Jakarta are planning to issue two kinds of
\nstickers to indicate whether a house owner has properly
\nimplemented the preventive measures.\"<\/p>\n
The move is also expected to prod residents to clean up their
\nareas because it will be their responsibility to prevent the
\nspread of the disease.<\/p>\n
Tini said the agency was also providing emergency beds in
\nhospitals for dengue patients. \"So far, we have helped Pondok
\nKopi Hospital with 70 beds.\"<\/p>\n
The Ministry of Health earlier predicted the peak of the
\ndengue outbreak would occur in April. (06)<\/p>",
