        "content": "<p>Agencies protest maids protection<\/p>\n<p>SINGAPORE (Reuter): Measures implemented by the Philippines to<br>\nprotect foreign domestic workers in Singapore put an unfair<br>\nfinancial burden on employers here without requiring adequate<br>\ncommitment from workers, an employment association said<br>\nyesterday.<\/p>\n<p>Chua Kim Seng, president of the Foreign Maids Employment<br>\nAgencies Association (FMEAA), said the 150-member group would<br>\nsubmit a petition to the Philippines Embassy to protest against<br>\nthe new provisions as well as the group's exclusion from a list<br>\nof 60 agencies accredited by the embassy.<\/p>\n<p>Chua said the measures, which include requirements that the<br>\nemployer pay for a maid's air ticket to Singapore, allow her to<br>\ntake weekends off and bear her repatriation costs if the contract<br>\nis terminated by either party, gave employers no protection if a<br>\nmaid decided to withdraw from her contract.<\/p>\n<p>\"The FMEAA feels that the cost of the air ticket must be borne<br>\nby the maid so there's an impetus for her to work here.<br>\nOtherwise, maids may see this as a holiday camp,\" Chua told a<br>\nnews conference.<\/p>",
