Agencies protest maids protection<\/p>\n
SINGAPORE (Reuter): Measures implemented by the Philippines to
\nprotect foreign domestic workers in Singapore put an unfair
\nfinancial burden on employers here without requiring adequate
\ncommitment from workers, an employment association said
\nyesterday.<\/p>\n
Chua Kim Seng, president of the Foreign Maids Employment
\nAgencies Association (FMEAA), said the 150-member group would
\nsubmit a petition to the Philippines Embassy to protest against
\nthe new provisions as well as the group's exclusion from a list
\nof 60 agencies accredited by the embassy.<\/p>\n
Chua said the measures, which include requirements that the
\nemployer pay for a maid's air ticket to Singapore, allow her to
\ntake weekends off and bear her repatriation costs if the contract
\nis terminated by either party, gave employers no protection if a
\nmaid decided to withdraw from her contract.<\/p>\n
\"The FMEAA feels that the cost of the air ticket must be borne
\nby the maid so there's an impetus for her to work here.
\nOtherwise, maids may see this as a holiday camp,\" Chua told a
\nnews conference.<\/p>",
