At least 55 people have died in various regions of Mexico following\nan operation that killed Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, also known as El\nMencho, leader of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG). The victims\ninclude 25 security personnel who died in retaliatory attacks by the\ncriminal group.<\/p>\n
Mexico\u2019s Secretary of Security and Citizen Protection, Omar Garcia\nHarfuch, stated that a wave of violence broke out in 16 states after the\noperation against El Mencho.<\/p>\n
\u201cA total of 25 security personnel died in attacks by the cartel,\nwhile 30 cartel members were killed in the operation,\u201d said Garcia\nHarfuch, as quoted by Anadolu.<\/p>\n
The cartel also blocked 85 highways in 11 states. Authorities\nresponded quickly, and traffic on major routes gradually returned to\nnormal.<\/p>\n

In Guadalajara, one of the host cities for the 2026 World Cup, about\n1,000 tourists were temporarily stranded while visiting the city\u2019s zoo.\nAuthorities deployed dozens of buses to evacuate and provide logistics\nfor the visitors.<\/p>\n
Flights in Puerto Vallarta were canceled, and several public events,\nincluding a concert by American singer Kali Uchis, were suspended.<\/p>\n
El Mencho\u2019s body was transported under heavy guard to a forensic\nfacility in Mexico City. The Mexican Attorney General\u2019s Office confirmed\nOseguera\u2019s identity through forensic and DNA tests.<\/p>\n
\u201cThey have identified and confirmed it,\u201d said Harfuch.<\/p>\n
El Mencho was previously on the US State Department\u2019s list of most\nwanted fugitives since 2016 and was wanted by the Western District of\nTexas court on charges of drug trafficking and money laundering.<\/p>\n
In 2018, Mexican authorities offered a reward of about US$1.5 million\nfor information leading to his arrest. The United States later increased\nthe reward to US$15 million in December 2024.<\/p>\n
