After TNI has a new boss<\/p>\n
This week, we probably will have a new TNI (The Indonesian
\nMilitary) chief. Last week, the House of Representatives
\nCommission I interviewed and studied the resume of the sole
\ncandidate to head TNI, namely, Gen. Endriartono Sutarto.<\/p>\n
The next question is what can be done by the new commander?<\/p>\n
Endriartono Sutarto has a reputation. During the
\nadministration of former president Abdurrahman Wahid, he had
\nshown the ability to defy the commander-in-chief, by not
\nsubmitting to what the military perceived as merely political
\ninterests by the president.<\/p>\n
However, just showing such an act is not enough. Many
\nchallenges in this era need to be dealt with by the military to
\nwork for fundamental changes. To carry out the change, vision is
\nneeded. So far, Endriartono has yet to demonstrate his vision
\nstrictly.<\/p>\n
The Ambon case is only one of many issues that will test the
\nprofessionalism of the military.<\/p>\n
The involvement of some military members in the murder of
\nTheys Hiyo Eluay in Irian Jaya is another case tarnishing the
\nIndonesian Military, not to mention other matters which are also
\nhighly related to the military role. Fish theft, illegal logging
\nand smuggling clearly require a serious and professional attitude
\nby the Indonesian Military.<\/p>\n
Can Endriartono answer the challenges? Yes, he can, as long as
\nhe continues to act openly and even actively look for outside
\ninput.<\/p>\n
