President Prabowo Subianto has targeted barren areas in East Nusa\nTenggara (NTT) to become green again within approximately 10 years\nthrough a reforestation programme involving regional governments,\nuniversities, and research institutions. The President conveyed this\nwhile chairing a coordination meeting on post-earthquake handling in NTT\nat the evacuation post of the 834\/Wakanga Mere Territorial Development\nBattalion Headquarters, Tonggurambang Village, Mbay, Nagekeo Regency, on\nWednesday (26\/8).<\/p>\n
Prabowo said the reduction in tree cover is one of the environmental\nproblems that needs to be addressed in NTT. \u201cThe problem here is that\nmany trees have been lost. So our people must be educated; land clearing\nmust not be done by burning,\u201d the President said, as monitored through\nthe Presidential Secretariat broadcast.<\/p>\n
According to the President, the reforestation of NTT needs to be\ncarried out in a planned manner involving the provincial government,\nregencies, the central government, and universities. \u201cThe province, then\nthe regencies, will later be assisted by the central government,\nassisted by universities, coordinated by the Directorate General of\nHigher Education and BRIN; they must have a team,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
The team, Prabowo said, can involve elements of regional government\nand universities, including polytechnics, which receive training to\naccelerate the reforestation programme.<\/p>\n
The President said the government had previously formed a team\ninvolving the Defence University, the Ministry of Higher Education,\nScience, and Technology, and the National Research and Innovation Agency\n(BRIN) to study methods for accelerating reforestation in several\ncountries.<\/p>\n
As part of the programme, Prabowo requested the construction of\nnurseries at the provincial level and in every regency to produce tree\nseedlings and productive plants. \u201cAll open land we will plant with\nproductive trees and trees to secure water,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
The President also encouraged the application of permaculture\nconcepts in mountainous areas and regions experiencing environmental\ndamage. According to him, applying this method takes time but can help\nimprove the soil\u2019s ability to store water.<\/p>\n
\u201cIf done carefully, within four, five, six years it can hold and\nincrease water in the ground,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
