Home Affairs Minister Muhammad Tito Karnavian has confirmed that the\ngovernment is moving quickly to handle the impact of the earthquake that\nstruck several areas in East Nusa Tenggara on Saturday morning (15\/8).\nTito made the statement during a coordination meeting on earthquake\nhandling for the NTT region, held in a hybrid format from the Regional\nSecretariat office of West Manggarai Regency on Sunday (16\/8).<\/p>\n
Tito said that initial post-earthquake handling is focused on\nrescuing victims and restoring various basic public services. These\nservices include electricity, telecommunications, availability of fuel,\nlogistics, as well as handling of fatalities and injured residents.\n\u201cThen also providing urgent assistance, tents, food, fast food at\nevacuation sites, including those who are injured,\u201d Tito said.<\/p>\n
At the same time, Tito expressed appreciation for the rapid\nrestoration of basic services, such as by state electricity company PLN\nand telecommunications operators. According to him, restoring\nelectricity and communication networks is important to support mobility\nand coordination of disaster response in the field.<\/p>\n
In addition to electricity and telecommunications, the Home Affairs\nMinister stressed the importance of accelerating the reopening of road\naccess so that the movement of people and heavy equipment for disaster\nresponse can be carried out immediately. He also asked regional\ngovernments to pay attention to affected communities, including\nresidents whose homes suffered damage. Data collection was emphasised to\nbe carried out thoroughly on damage to houses and public facilities.<\/p>\n
The data is said to be necessary as a basis for providing government\nassistance, whether for lightly, moderately or heavily damaged houses,\nas well as support for residents still in evacuation. The Home Affairs\nMinister also requested the same approach be applied to affected\ngovernment offices, from district government offices down to village and\nsub-district levels. The data collection aims to determine the repair\nneeds of government facilities so that public services continue to\nrun.<\/p>\n

Furthermore, the Home Affairs Minister highlighted the fiscal\ncondition of several affected regions. He said the central government\nwill provide support to regions with limited fiscal capacity or low\nbudget absorption rates. He also requested that cross-ministerial and\ninstitutional coordination with regional governments be strengthened so\nthat disaster handling can be carried out according to disaster\nmanagement stages, namely from the emergency response period,\ntransition, to rehabilitation and reconstruction.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe suggest truly mapping the existing problems. And let us\nimmediately move with our respective authorities. Whether it is\nPertamina, electricity, roads, health, and so on,\u201d the Home Affairs\nMinister concluded.<\/p>\n
