        "content": "<p>Kigali, Rwanda \u2014 The Africa Centres for Disease Control and\nPrevention (Africa CDC) has warned 10 African countries of heightened\nrisk from an Ebola outbreak following a surge in cases in the Democratic\nRepublic of Congo, whilst the World Health Organisation (WHO) has raised\nalert status to \u201cvery high\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Africa CDC Director Jean Kaseya identified the at-risk countries as\nRwanda, Kenya, Tanzania, Angola, Burundi, the Central African Republic,\nthe Republic of Congo, Ethiopia, South Sudan, and Zambia.<\/p>\n<p>With the exception of Ethiopia, all of these countries share direct\nborders with the Democratic Republic of Congo or Uganda, which have\nreported Ebola cases to date.<\/p>\n<p>Africa CDC and the WHO have jointly requested funding exceeding\nUS$314 million to finance the Ebola outbreak response. Response measures\ninclude establishing national incident management systems, cross-border\ncoordination, acceleration of Bundibugyo strain vaccine research,\ndeployment of additional response teams, and positioning emergency\nstockpiles.<\/p>\n<p>The Democratic Republic of Congo has experienced a surge in cases\nsince the outbreak was announced on 15 May in Ituri Province. The\ndisease subsequently spread to North Kivu and South Kivu Provinces.<\/p>\n<p>The WHO reports approximately 750 suspected cases and 177 suspected\ndeaths from Ebola. At least 82 cases and seven deaths have been\nconfirmed in the Democratic Republic of Congo.<\/p>\n<p>Uganda\u2019s Ministry of Health reported three new cases on Saturday,\nbringing the total confirmed cases in the current outbreak to five.<\/p>\n<p>The Government of the Democratic Republic of Congo has suspended\nvarious social activities in Ituri, the epicentre of the outbreak,\nincluding sporting events to suppress virus transmission.<\/p>\n<p>Military Governor General Johnny Luboya has also prohibited\ngatherings of more than 50 people in the health zones of Bunia,\nRwampara, Mungwalu, and Nyakunde, which have experienced a surge in\nconfirmed Ebola cases.<\/p>\n<p>The WHO has raised alert status to \u201cvery high\u201d, whilst several\nneighbouring countries have tightened preventive measures, including\ntravel restrictions from the Democratic Republic of Congo.<\/p>",
