Surakarta, Central Java (ANTARA) \u2013 Animal Friends Jogja (AFJ) says\nstronger communication and collaboration among companies, suppliers, the\ngovernment and other stakeholders are needed to turn commitments to use\ncage-free eggs into concrete, measurable and accountable\nimplementation.<\/p>\n
\u201cA commitment to cage-free eggs is only the first step. The next\nchallenge is ensuring that it is genuinely put into practice,\u201d said Elly\nMangunsong, AFJ\u2019s Director of Farmed Animal Welfare Advocacy Programmes,\nin a statement issued in Surakarta, Central Java, on Saturday.<\/p>\n
She said the transition was part of efforts to improve the welfare of\nlaying hens, as cage-free systems allow them to move more freely and\nexpress their natural behaviours than battery-cage systems.<\/p>\n
\u201cOpenness, collaboration and concrete action from various parties are\ntherefore needed to ensure that changes in the supply chain also have a\nreal impact on the welfare of laying hens,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
She added that companies\u2019 commitments to switch to cage-free eggs\nneeded to be matched by a supply chain capable of consistently meeting\nindustry demand.<\/p>\n
Supply availability, costs, quality standards, distribution,\ntraceability and product verification are among the key considerations\nfor putting such commitments into business operations.<\/p>\n
These issues were discussed at the Corporate Roundtable Discussion\n2026, organised by AFJ under the theme \u2018Beyond Commitment: Corporate\nInsights and Collaboration for Responsible Sourcing\u2019.<\/p>\n
Boethdy Angkasa, head of the Implementation, Supervision and\nLivestock Product Quality Certification Subdivision at the Directorate\nGeneral of Livestock and Animal Health Services, Ministry of\nAgriculture, said the government would support the transition to\ncage-free systems as a form of product differentiation that could be\npromoted in line with healthy-lifestyle trends.<\/p>\n
Tri Widiantoro of Chocolate Monggo stressed the importance of\nintegrating responsible sourcing into business decisions and consumer\neducation.<\/p>\n
\u201cResponsible procurement of raw materials needs to be part of a\nbusiness strategy, not simply an additional burden for companies,\u201d he\nsaid.<\/p>\n
Participants in a focus group discussion identified three main\nchallenges to implementing cage-free egg commitments: limited supply and\ninformation about cage-free farms, low public awareness, and cage-free\neggs\u2019 higher prices compared with eggs from battery-cage systems.<\/p>\n
Companies that have made commitments said supply constraints could be\naddressed by working with more than one farmer.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, consumer awareness could be raised by sharing relevant\ninformation in ways that keep pace with the times.
