AFC plans soccer summit<\/p>\n
KUALA LUMPUR (AFP): The president of the Asian Football
\nConfederation plans a special summit of world soccer leaders to
\nresolve a growing row with FIFA president Joao Havelange.<\/p>\n
Sultan Ahmad Shah said yesterday he wanted a meeting of the
\nheads of the five continental federations to end a dispute over
\nHavelange's appointments that threatens to undermine the
\nauthority of the international governing body.<\/p>\n
Havelange has angered the European and Asian federations with
\nhis nominations to the FIFA standing committees that run
\ninternational soccer. Many of the officials were not supported by
\nthe continental federations.<\/p>\n
Ahmad said he had lodged a formal complaint with Havelange and
\nreceived an "unsatisfactory" reply. He said he had proposed a
\nsummit of federation leaders at the Intercontinental
\nChampionships in Riyadh next month.<\/p>\n
Ahmad told an AFC executive meeting in Kuala Lumpur that the
\nAsian body had 23 of its members on the various committees but
\nthat two who were not recommended had also been appointed.<\/p>\n
He said he was "concerned" by Havelange's action which, he
\nsaid, "undermines the credibility of the AFC."<\/p>\n
Lennart Johansson, president of the European governing body,
\nUEFA, warned last week that his organization may pull out of FIFA
\nover the appointments. Press reports have said the North American
\nfederation, CONCACAF, was also angry.<\/p>",
