        "content": "<p>AFC plans soccer summit<\/p>\n<p>KUALA LUMPUR (AFP): The president of the Asian Football<br>\nConfederation plans a special summit of world soccer leaders to<br>\nresolve a growing row with FIFA president Joao Havelange.<\/p>\n<p>Sultan Ahmad Shah said yesterday he wanted a meeting of the<br>\nheads of the five continental federations to end a dispute over<br>\nHavelange&apos;s appointments that threatens to undermine the<br>\nauthority of the international governing body.<\/p>\n<p>Havelange has angered the European and Asian federations with<br>\nhis nominations to the FIFA standing committees that run<br>\ninternational soccer. Many of the officials were not supported by<br>\nthe continental federations.<\/p>\n<p>Ahmad said he had lodged a formal complaint with Havelange and<br>\nreceived an &quot;unsatisfactory&quot; reply. He said he had proposed a<br>\nsummit of federation leaders at the Intercontinental<br>\nChampionships in Riyadh next month.<\/p>\n<p>Ahmad told an AFC executive meeting in Kuala Lumpur that the<br>\nAsian body had 23 of its members on the various committees but<br>\nthat two who were not recommended had also been appointed.<\/p>\n<p>He said he was &quot;concerned&quot; by Havelange&apos;s action which, he<br>\nsaid, &quot;undermines the credibility of the AFC.&quot;<\/p>\n<p>Lennart Johansson, president of the European governing body,<br>\nUEFA, warned last week that his organization may pull out of FIFA<br>\nover the appointments. Press reports have said the North American<br>\nfederation, CONCACAF, was also angry.<\/p>",
