Adisumarmo can handle 6m passengers a year<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): The Adisumarmo airport in Surakarta, Central
\nJava is expected to accommodate up to six million passengers per
\nyear within the next 20 years, an executive said yesterday.<\/p>\n
Darma Tyanto Saptodewo, a PT Citra Lamtoro Gung Persada
\nexecutive, said the airport's runway had been expanded to 2,400
\nmeters from 1,800 meters to accommodate wide-body aircraft.<\/p>\n
\"A MD11 jet is now able to land and take off from the
\nairport,\" he said after speaking on business opportunities in the
\nYogyakarta-Solo-Semarang (Joglosemar) area here yesterday.<\/p>\n
The Adisumarmo expansion project, developed under a 20-year
\njoint operation contract with state-owned airport management firm
\nPT Angkasa Pura I, will be carried out in several phases, with
\nthe first stage already underway.<\/p>\n
The first phase, carried out by Lamtoro Gung's subsidiary PT
\nYala Perkasa Internasional in cooperation with the government,
\ninvolves Rp 30 billion (US$10 million) investment.<\/p>\n
He said the Adisumarmo airport, which has a capacity to
\nreceive about 200 domestic and international flights, handled
\nonly 250,000 passengers per annum.<\/p>\n
\"We expect other overseas airlines from Asia and Europe will
\nsoon fly to Surakarta,\" Saptodewo said, adding the Joglosemar
\narea would be developed into a major tourist destination and a
\npotential business center.<\/p>\n
\"We will encourage foreign investors to enter the area and not
\njust focus on the greater Jakarta area,\" he said.<\/p>\n
Funds<\/p>\n
Saptodewo said about 30 percent of the Rp 30 billion
\ninvestment funds for the first expansion phase was provided by
\nAngkasa Pura, while the remainder was from Lamtoro Gung --
\ncontrolled by President Soeharto's eldest daughter, Siti
\nHardiyanti Rukmana.<\/p>\n
Lamtoro Gung's investment will also cover the cost of
\nimproving the interior design and landscaping as well as
\nadditional facilities in the passenger terminal and cargo
\nwarehouses.<\/p>\n
The government has made Adisumarmo an international airport to
\nsupport tourism in Yogyakarta, Surakarta and Semarang, which are
\nwell-known for their traditional Javanese culture. The
\nAdisumarmo airport was considered more appropriate for the
\nexpansion because of its geographical location.<\/p>\n
Lamtoro Gung is also planning to construct a toll road
\nconnecting Surakarta and Yogyakarta.<\/p>\n
Saptodewo said yesterday the groundbreaking of the toll road
\nproject was scheduled to take place later this year. (icn)<\/p>",
