Adhoc tribunal on rights abuses<\/p>\n
State Secretary\/Cabinet Secretary Bambang Kesowo said on
\nWednesday that he had not yet received the names of the 32
\njudicial candidates needed for the implementation of the adhoc
\ntribunal for human rights abuses in East Timor from the National
\nCommission for Human Rights (Komnas HAM) and the Supreme Court.<\/p>\n
\"I haven't received the list. I do not know, maybe the list
\nwas already sent to my office, maybe it was lost, but I have not
\ngotten it,\" Bambang said.<\/p>\n
Komnas HAM chairman Djoko Sugianto urged President Megawati
\nSoekarnoputri earlier to issue a presidential decree to name the
\njudges for the adhoc tribunal as soon as possible.<\/p>\n
The plan to establish the much-awaited, yet highly sensitive,
\ntribunal has been postponed several times by officials due to
\nsome fancy administrative sidestepping. The hearing will
\nreportedly be opened in January.<\/p>\n
\"As soon as I receive it, I will give it to the President,\"
\nBambang remarked.<\/p>\n
Megawati, in the early days of her presidency, issued a
\npresidential decree to establish the adhoc tribunal to try those
\nsuspected of involvement in human rights violations in the 1984
\nmelee at Tanjung Priok, North Jakarta, and the 1999 atrocities in
\nEast Timor before and after the UN-administered popular
\nconsultation.<\/p>\n
Several high ranking military personnel have been named as
\nsuspects in both cases. --JP<\/p>",
