Ade released, but remains a witness<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): South Jakarta Police have released veteran
\nsinger Ade Manuhutu after he was held for questioning over his
\nalleged involvement in counterfeiting money, an officer said on
\nMonday.<\/p>\n
South Jakarta Police chief of detectives Comr. Napoleon
\nBonaparte said that 54-year-old Ade was released over the weekend
\nbecause preliminary questioning revealed that he was not involved
\nin counterfeiting U.S. dollars.<\/p>\n
\"He was released but retains his status as witness, so we can
\nsummon him at anytime for further questioning,\" Napoleon said.<\/p>\n
The singer turned preacher, whose song Nona Ana became a huge
\nhit in the 1970s, is required to report to police twice a week,
\nnamely every Monday and Thursday.<\/p>\n
Jakarta Police Spokesman Sr. Comr. Anton Bachrul Alam said on
\nMonday that the police were also investigating whether he was
\nconnected in any way to the counterfeiting of U.S. dollars in
\nMakassar. \"But we released him because we didn't have sufficient
\nevidence,\" he said.<\/p>\n
Police in Makassar arrested on Saturday three foreigners in
\nconnection with the counterfeit dollars.<\/p>\n
Ade was held by South Jakarta Police on Jl. Metro Pondok Indah
\nuntil the early hours of Saturday morning during which police
\nfound items believed to be used for counterfeiting money inside a
\nmetallic suitcase he was carrying.<\/p>\n
But Ade told police that the suitcase belonged to a friend who
\nhad entrusted him with it.<\/p>\n
\"He (Ade) has told us what he knows about the suitcase and its
\nowner. The suitcase was confiscated as criminal evidence. We hope
\nit will help lead us to the real criminals,\" Napoleon added.<\/p>\n
Police found inside the suitcase several silk-screening tools,
\npaper the size of dollar banknotes, bottles of black ink, plastic
\nwrappers and white chemical powder.<\/p>\n
Napoleon said police were still investigating the case and
\nwere looking for the owner of the suitcase who Ade described as
\nhis friend.<\/p>\n
The man, a foreigner identified as \"C\", was said to be staying
\nat a hotel in Central Jakarta. But he was not there when police
\nraided his room.<\/p>\n
Napoleon declined to comment further, saying only that the
\ninvestigation was underway.<\/p>\n
However, a police source disclosed that Ade was under close
\nsurveillance as officers needed to crosscheck his information
\nwith the owner of the suitcase and if there was a connection
\nbetween Ade and the foreigner.<\/p>\n
\"It is very likely that Ade knows about the crime. If he is
\nfound to know about it without telling us beforehand, then he
\ncould be charged for withholding information,\" the officer said.
