ADB provides $60m funds for RP<\/p>\n
Manila: The Asian Development Bank (ADB) said on Friday it has
\nreleased an additional US$60 million for a project to
\nrehabilitate the Philippines' most polluted river.<\/p>\n
The Manila-based ADB said the additional funding represented
\nthe second and last trance of a $100 million loan approved in
\n2000 to help cleanup the Pasig River in Manila.<\/p>\n
Michael Lindfield, ADB's senior officer in charge of the
\nproject, said the program to save the Pasig River has been
\n\"making significant progress\".<\/p>\n
Fifteen parks have either been completed or are being
\ndeveloped along the river's banks, providing \"much-needed
\nbreathing space for the cramped riverside communities\", he said.<\/p>\n
\"In these areas, flows of raw sewage and storm water into the
\nriver have been considerably reduced and local governments are
\npreparing ambitious plans for urban renewal,\" he added.<\/p>\n
The Pasig River, the main waterway flowing through Manila, is
\nseriously polluted due to indiscriminate discharge of untreated
\nmunicipal and industrial waste water and solid waste. -- dpa<\/p>",
