ADB approves loans to RI<\/p>\n
MANILA (AFP): The Asian Development Bank said here yesterday
\nit has approved loans totaling US$45.6 million to the protect the
\necology of the Indonesian island of Java.<\/p>\n
The loans will go to arresting environmental damage to the
\nSegara Anakan lagoon, a major mangrove area in Java which is a
\nbreeding ground for fish, shrimps, crabs, a refuge for endangered
\nspecies of water birds and mammals and a source of mangrove wood,
\nthe Manila-based bank said in a statement.<\/p>\n
The lagoon has suffered from soil erosion which threatens to
\nfill it in within 10 years unless it is preserved, the
\ndevelopment bank warned.<\/p>\n
The bank loans will support a project which includes water
\nresource management, sedimentation control and community
\ndevelopment, intended to protect the lagoon.<\/p>\n
Aside from the loans, the development bank is to provide a
\n$250,000 technical advisory grant to strengthen forestry and soil
\nconservation services in Cilacap and Ciamis districts near the
\nproject site.<\/p>",
