Adaro targets output of 19m tons<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Coal mining company PT Adaro Indonesia has
\nplanned to increase its output to 19 million tons of coal this
\nyear, up from 16 million tons in 2000, amid stronger world demand
\nfor the commodity.<\/p>\n
Adaro general manager A.H. Chia said that, despite a slump in
\nthe world economy, there was an increase in coal demand globally.<\/p>\n
\"World demand for coal is picking up because of higher fuel
\nprices,\" he said on the sidelines of a business luncheon
\norganized by the Indonesia-Australia Business Council (IABC).<\/p>\n
He said that this was the first year the coal industry had
\nseen world coal prices rebound, after a slump in recent years due
\nto oversupply.<\/p>\n
Chia said Adaro was still able to raise output at its coal
\nmine in South Kalimantan as production there had yet to reach its
\nfull potential.<\/p>\n
The company hoped to reach its optimum annual production rate
\nof 20 million tons next year, he added.<\/p>\n
Adaro produces clean coal, labeled \"Envirocoal\".<\/p>\n
Although its coal contains only a moderate energy capacity,
\nAdaro claims it has the world's lowest sulfur and ash content,
\nresulting in environmentally-friendly coal.<\/p>\n
The company said its customers use the coal in tandem with
\nhigh heat-value coal to achieve local environmental emission
\nstandards.<\/p>\n
Adaro's primary markets are Europe and America.<\/p>\n
Chia further said that illegal miners had left Adaro's mining
\narea.<\/p>\n
\"They left because mining at our location turned out to be
\neconomically unviable,\" he said.<\/p>\n
He also said the illegal miners were discouraged from
\ncontinuing their activities due to the long distance between
\nAdaro's operation and the ports.<\/p>\n
The illegal miners have moved to other sites which are closer
\nto the ports, he said.<\/p>\n
The local community, he added, had shown little support for
\nthe illegal miners, given their environmentally destructive
\nactivities.<\/p>\n
\"People began to realize that illegal miners brought only
\nshort-term benefits. Once they are done, they just leave,\" he
\nsaid.<\/p>\n
Adaro is 50 percent owned by Australia's New Hope Corporation
\nLtd, 40 percent by the local Swabara Group, and 10 percent by
\nAmerican-based Mission Energy.(bkm)<\/p>",
