Actress suffers from fever in cell<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Actress and playwright Ratna Sarumpaet,
\ncurrently detained at the Jakarta Police Headquarters on charges
\nof holding an illegal political meeting, is sick, her lawyer said
\nyesterday.<\/p>\n
Ratna, who was arrested with seven other people in a North
\nJakarta hotel on March 10, has a fever, Johnson Panjaitan said.<\/p>\n
\"The police should let her relatives take her out for medical
\ntreatment,\" Johnson told The Jakarta Post.<\/p>\n
Ratna has rejected the authorities' advice to go to the Police
\nHospital in Kramat Jati, East Jakarta, because she considers the
\nconditions there bad, Johnson said.<\/p>\n
Prison conditions where Ratna shares a cell with other alleged
\ncriminals are unhealthy, he said. Ratna's face is swollen and
\nlooks reddish; she complained her illness had worsened after
\ntaking medication from the detention center's doctor.<\/p>\n
\"The psychological pressure has also made it difficult for
\nRatna to sleep,\" the lawyer said.<\/p>\n
Last week, the police turned down her lawyers' request
\nthat she be put under house arrest. Her relatives plan another
\nappeal.<\/p>\n
\"The request is urgent given Ratna's condition,\" Johnson said.
\n\"We urge the police to seriously consider our appeal for house
\narrest.<\/p>\n
\"We also appeal that her case and that of other detainees' be
\nreferred to the prosecutors soon,\" he added.<\/p>\n
Ratna is being detained with Jul Taher, Nandang Wirakusumah,
\nGing Ginandjar and Alexius Surya Tjahaya Tomu. Three others who
\nwere arrested include Ratna's daughter Fathom Saulina, who has
\nbeen released from detention on her father's request. (anr)<\/p>",
