Activists protest violence against women<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Some 150 protesters, mostly from the Women's
\nCoalition Against Violence, took to the streets on Friday to
\nprotest violence against women. The protest coincided with the
\nInternational Day of Anti-Violence Against Women, which falls on
\nNov. 24.<\/p>\n
The 30-minute demonstration started with the protesters
\nmarching from Tugu Proklamasi Monument on Jl. Proklamasi, Central
\nJakarta, to the Hotel Indonesia traffic circle in Central Jakarta
\nat about 2 p.m.<\/p>\n
The protesters unfurled banners and posters reiterating their
\ncall to stop all violence against women. The banners and posters
\nread \"stop violence against women\" and \"collective action toward
\na society without violence\".<\/p>\n
In its statement, the coalition lashed out at the government
\nfor failing to protect women from all types of violence.<\/p>\n
The coalition said the government even legalized violence
\nagainst women, citing the deliberation of the bill on rape. The
\ngroup condemned the bill, which stipulates that rape was only
\nregarded as a crime against morality, and not ruled as a crime
\nagainst humanity.<\/p>\n
Failure<\/p>\n
The government was also criticized for its failure to solve
\ncases involving violence against women, including rape and other
\nkinds of sexual assault reported during the May 1998 riots.<\/p>\n
The coalition, comprising groups of women's organizations such
\nas Kalyanamitra and Jaringan Mitra Perempuan, urged that the
\ngovernment create \"favorable instruments of law\", which would be
\nable to diminish violence against women.<\/p>\n
The government was also urged to investigate and prosecute any
\nparties conducting violence against women and to establish
\nequality and justice before the law.<\/p>\n
The government should also create a control mechanism in the
\npromotion of government officials, the coalition said.<\/p>\n
After staging the demonstration, the protesters dispersed
\npeacefully, marching back to Tugu Proklamasi, some two kilometers
\nfrom the Hotel Indonesia traffic circle. (asa)<\/p>",
