JAKARTA \u2014 Lita Anggraini, coordinator of the National Network for the\nAdvocacy of Domestic Workers (JALA PRT), has called for the rapid\nresolution of the Rancangan Undang-Undang Perlindungan Pekerja Rumah\nTangga (RUU PPRT), given that President Prabowo has pledged to complete\nit within three months.<\/p>\n
\u2018So it won\u2019t drag on any longer because his promise was three months;\nit\u2019s been almost a year since that promise. This is a form of the\nstate\u2019s presence for protecting domestic workers,\u2019 Lita told reporters\nat the DPR RI Building on Thursday, 5 March 2026.<\/p>\n
According to Lita, passage of the bill is urgently needed because\ndomestic workers remain vulnerable to violence and discrimination.<\/p>\n
\u2018Proceed as quickly as possible, given the urgency to prevent\nviolence and discrimination against domestic workers. And it has been\nawaited for 22 years,\u2019 she said.<\/p>\n
She noted that domestic workers play a vital role in sustaining\ncommunity life.<\/p>\n
\u2018Without domestic workers, Indonesia would be paralysed,\u2019 Lita\nsaid.<\/p>\n
She also encouraged the RUU PPRT discussions to move quickly into the\ndecision-making stage, so that it could be adopted as a DPR inisiatif\n(initiative) bill and discussed with the government.<\/p>\n
\u2018If there are no more RDP sessions, go straight to plenary for the\narticles and move into the initiative. We hope the DPR leadership, the\nSpeaker of the DPR, will approve it as a DPR-initiative Bill, to be\ndiscussed with the government, and for the \u2019R\u2019 to disappear and become\nLaw,\u2019 she said.<\/p>\n
Lita added that after becoming a DPR-initiative bill, the government\nis expected to promptly send the presidential letter (surpres) and the\nlist of issues (DIM) so that the first reading can begin.<\/p>\n
\u2018So initiative, surpres, and DIM from the government, then the first\nreading discussion, and soon it will be enacted as a law,\u2019 she\nconcluded.<\/p>\n
The private nature of domestic work means government oversight is\nlimited, leaving room for discrimination, exploitation, and\nviolence.<\/p>\n
Since 2004, the PPRT Bill has consistently appeared in the National\nLegislation Programme (Prolegnas) in every DPR term, but has yet to be\nenacted by the end of the 2019-2024 DPR term.<\/p>\n
President Prabowo has previously stated his commitment to pushing\nthrough the bill.<\/p>\n
On International Workers\u2019 Day at Monas, Jakarta, on 1 May 2025,\nPrabowo said discussion of the PPRT Bill would soon begin in the\nDPR.<\/p>\n
\u2018We will soon push through the Protection of Domestic Workers Bill.\nThe Deputy Speaker of the DPR present, Mr Sufmi Dasco Ahmad, reported to\nme that next week this Bill will soon start being debated,\u2019 Prabowo said\nat the time.<\/p>\n
