Activists demand reform coalition<\/p>\n
YOGYAKARTA: Approximately 100 activists of the Democratic
\nPeople's Party (PRD) staged a rally on Thursday to convey a
\ndemand that reform parties coalesce in order to prevent the
\nrevival of status quo forces embodied in Golkar.<\/p>\n
The demonstration was held outside of the Provincial Elections
\nCommittee. Spokesman Haris Rusli Moti said they were concerned
\nbecause preliminary results of vote counting showed that Golkar
\nwas gaining ground. Should Golkar win and unite with the military
\nfaction, which was allotted 38 non-elected seats at the House of
\nRepresentatives, it could dominate the next government, he said.<\/p>\n
\"The only thing that could block the status quo force is a
\ncoalition between reform parties such as PAN, PDI Perjuangan,
\nPKB, PK (Justice Party) and PUDI (Indonesian United Democratic
\nParty),\" he said.<\/p>\n
\"Under one condition, namely that the coalition was not merely
\na vote sharing deal or coalition of seats in the parliament, but
\na true coalition that will fight for programs for the people,
\ninvolving all reform elements which include for pedicab drivers,
\nworkers, farmers, students and women,\" he said.<\/p>\n
Moti said standing alone, the top parties such as PDI
\nPerjuangan, PKB and PAN would not be able to prevent the status
\nquo. The activists also voiced their support for PKB leader
\nAbdurrahman Wahid's wish to build a civilian emergency
