Activist jailed for labor riot<\/p>\n
MEDAN, North Sumatra: The Medan District Court has sentenced
\nan activist to 10 months imprisonment for his role in a violent
\nlabor strike last April.<\/p>\n
Presiding Judge Haogoaro Harefa said on Thursday that Mayasyak
\nJohan, executive director of the Institute for the Advocacy of
\nIndonesian Children, was found guilty of inciting workers to
\nstage a vicious demonstration, Antara reported.<\/p>\n
In a meeting between the workers and executives of the
\nIndonesian Prosperous Labor Union, Johan told them to march to
\nthe North Sumatra gubernatorial office on April 14, which
\nresulted in their smashing shops and vehicles, according to the
\nverdict.<\/p>\n
One businessman was killed, while a number of buildings and
\nvehicles were badly damaged during the demonstration.<\/p>\n
In November, SBSI leader Muchtar Pakpahan received a three-
\nyear jail term for his part in the riot. (sim)<\/p>",
