Activist Farid Faqih went on trial<\/p>\n
ACEH BESAR: The trial of anticorruption activist Farid Faqih, who
\nis accused of attempting to steal aid destined for tsunami
\nvictims, began in Aceh on Tuesday.<\/p>\n
Proceedings at the Jantho Court, Aceh Besar, about 50 km south
\nof Banda Aceh, started at noon with prosecutors reading an
\nindictment.<\/p>\n
\"The defendant Farid Faqih took humanitarian relief aid for
\nvictims of the earthquake and tsunami without asking the owners
\nof the aid permission or the officers in charge at the airport,
\nwith the defendant having full knowledge the aid was not his,\"
\nprosecutor Nur Alba said.<\/p>\n
According to military police sources, the aid arrived by plane
\nat the Iskandar Muda Air Base in the Blang Bintang area just
\noutside of Banda Aceh in January. The donations came from the
\nmilitary officers' wives association and were logged in and
\nreceived by a military officer, Capt. T. Syuib Mahmud.<\/p>\n
After checking the aid containers on the tarmac, Syuib
\nreported their arrival to the TNI's operational command. After
\nhanding over the manifest, he went back to the tarmac, but the
\ncontainers had gone.<\/p>\n
Syuib later discovered the supplies had been loaded onto two
\ntrucks and taken to a warehouse and became outraged. After an
\nargument, he attacked Farid. Syuib was later sentenced to three
\nmonths jail for assault.<\/p>\n
Prosecutors said Farid, the coordinator of Government Watch
\n(GOWA) a non-governmental anticorruption watchdog, had planned to
\nsteal the aid and had violated article 363 and 362 of the
\nCriminal Code. If convicted, he could be imprisoned for up to
