Action to combat piracy urged<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): The Association of Southeast Asian Nations
\n(ASEAN) should join forces to combat rampant copyright and
\ntrademark piracy in the region, officials and experts on
\nintellectual property rights said on Friday.<\/p>\n
Closer cooperation and coordination among intellectual
\nproperty offices, law enforcement and custom agencies were
\ninstrumental to combat copyright piracy, the ASEAN policy forum
\non intellectual property rights concluded in a statement at the
\nend of a three-day meeting in Denpasar, Bali.<\/p>\n
"The Forum agreed on the importance of strong ASEAN
\ncooperation in the enforcement of intellectual property rights,
\nincluding cross-border measures, the exchange of information and
\nsharing of experiences in deterring violations or combating
\npiracy and counterfeiting."<\/p>\n
"Demystification of intellectual property to the general
\npublic through awareness and outreach programs" was also
\nimportant to effective enforcement, it said.<\/p>\n
"The Forum emphasized the need to promote greater awareness
\nand understanding of intellectual property at every echelon of
\nthe society, in particular, among policy makers, intellectual
\nproperty offices and administrations," the statement said.<\/p>\n
The Forum also raised the importance of "the protection and
\nthe creation of a system that will avoid unscrupulous
\nexploitation of traditional knowledge".<\/p>\n
"Although traditional knowledge has become prominent ... there
\nhas not been adequate international legal protection. A
\nconsultation mechanism should be established to build
\ninternational consensus on the issues," the Forum said.<\/p>\n
The forum was co-organized by the World Intellectual Property
\nOrganization (WIPO) and the Ministry of Law and Legislation's
\nDirectorate General of Intellectual Property Rights. (byg)<\/p>",
