        "content": "<p>Action to combat piracy urged<\/p>\n<p>JAKARTA (JP): The Association of Southeast Asian Nations<br>\n(ASEAN) should join forces to combat rampant copyright and<br>\ntrademark piracy in the region, officials and experts on<br>\nintellectual property rights said on Friday.<\/p>\n<p>Closer cooperation and coordination among intellectual<br>\nproperty offices, law enforcement and custom agencies were<br>\ninstrumental to combat copyright piracy, the ASEAN policy forum<br>\non intellectual property rights concluded in a statement at the<br>\nend of a three-day meeting in Denpasar, Bali.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;The Forum agreed on the importance of strong ASEAN<br>\ncooperation in the enforcement of intellectual property rights,<br>\nincluding cross-border measures, the exchange of information and<br>\nsharing of experiences in deterring violations or combating<br>\npiracy and counterfeiting.&quot;<\/p>\n<p>&quot;Demystification of intellectual property to the general<br>\npublic through awareness and outreach programs&quot; was also<br>\nimportant to effective enforcement, it said.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;The Forum emphasized the need to promote greater awareness<br>\nand understanding of intellectual property at every echelon of<br>\nthe society, in particular, among policy makers, intellectual<br>\nproperty offices and administrations,&quot; the statement said.<\/p>\n<p>The Forum also raised the importance of &quot;the protection and<br>\nthe creation of a system that will avoid unscrupulous<br>\nexploitation of traditional knowledge&quot;.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;Although traditional knowledge has become prominent ... there<br>\nhas not been adequate international legal protection. A<br>\nconsultation mechanism should be established to build<br>\ninternational consensus on the issues,&quot; the Forum said.<\/p>\n<p>The forum was co-organized by the World Intellectual Property<br>\nOrganization (WIPO) and the Ministry of Law and Legislation&apos;s<br>\nDirectorate General of Intellectual Property Rights.
