Acehnese woman writer launches novel<\/p>\n
Acehnese writer Riati M.K. has launched on Wednesday her first
\nnovel, Seulanga Gelora Cinta di Tengah Perjuangan Aceh (Seulanga:
\nGlory of love amid Aceh's struggle), which tells a tale of a
\nwoman named Seulanga as she searches for her parents' murderers
\nduring the armed conflict in Aceh.<\/p>\n
Along her search, Seulanga meets and then enters into a
\nromantic relationship with Salam, a youth leader of Aceh's
\nseparatist movement.<\/p>\n
In the novel, the armed conflict is presented in the context
\nof mixed business and political interests through its
\nantagonists. National and foreign companies operating in natural
\nresource-rich Aceh also provide a background to the novel.<\/p>\n
While Seulanga -- published by Creative Media and Tea Time
\nInc. Jakarta -- is a work of fiction, the writer said it was
\ninspired by her childhood experiences.<\/p>\n
Born on Nov. 18, 1968, in Langsa Aceh, Riati is among the few
\nAcehnese writers -- if not the only Acehnese woman author -- to
\nhave published in Jakarta who interweaves her novel with a
\ncolorful backdrop of Aceh and its cultural heritage, such as
\nproverbs.<\/p>\n
A graduate of the English Department of Syah Kuala University,
\nBanda Aceh, and currently an editor of a production house in
\nJakarta, Riati hoped that Seulanga would raise awareness among
\nreaders as to the past conflict and its effects on the Acehnese.<\/p>\n
Although the novel could be categorized as popular fiction,
\nupon reading it, readers will be introduced to the prolonged
\nsuffering of the Acehnese people and the complexity of the issues
\nthere.<\/p>\n
