Aceh warned of human trafficking<\/p>\n
JAKARTA: A national movement sponsored by the State Ministry
\nof Women's Empowerment reiterated a call on Tuesday for
\nauthorities, relief agencies and community leaders to step up
\nsecurity efforts to prevent women and child trafficking in
\ntsunami-ravaged Aceh.<\/p>\n
Dewi Hughes, spokeswoman for the movement called the Campaign
\nto Eliminate the Trafficking of Indonesian Women and Children,
\nrevealed that during her two-day visit to the province she
\nlearned that there had been several cases in which Acehnese
\nchildren had gone unexplainably missing from refugee camps and
\nhospitals.<\/p>\n
"Although there is no hard evidence, the potential is really
\nthere because security at the camps is so lax," she said in a
\npress statement.<\/p>\n
Hughes, also a television presenter, said she found out that
\neven before the tsunami devastated Aceh on Dec. 26, young women
\nand girls had reportedly been trafficked from villages to Banda
\nAceh or to Malaysia and Thailand, where they were forced into
\nprostitution or slave-like labor.<\/p>\n
"Human trafficking is now an even greater danger to innocent
\nAcehnese women and children than ever before. We need to ensure
\ngreater security against traffickers," she said. -- JP<\/p>",
